We had a bit of a scare last night will our precious little Lillabel! We had gone out to the river at Governor’s Land with a group of William and Mary kids where they were having a Tribe Fellowship (kind of like FCA) gathering. There was a huge turnout including several of Jon’s basketball players who are really involved at church and with Tribe Fellowship. We had a blast (except for one part which I will tell you about in a minute).  Lillie was in heaven – kids, music, food, sports and “wawa”, all of her favorite things in one place! Of course she wanted to be in the water most of the time. Here she is with Quinn and JohnMark. (Sorry – not the best quality photos). They were tossing her back and forth and she was squealing with delight.

(And yes, they are wearing tiny matching neon swimsuits from the 80’s – they remind me so much of Jason and Jake it isn’t even funny!) However, I won’t be making fun of JohnMark ever again after last night!
So, anyway, after playing with them for a while in the water, Quinn got out to get some food. Lillie was out in the water standing next to JohnMark and splashing away. I was standing on the shore about 10 to 15 feet from them when I saw something gliding toward Lillie. I froze because it looked like a shark the way it was poked up out of the water and was slithering, but I knew of course there wouldn’t be a shark in the river. It took about 2 or 3 seconds of me staring at it when my heart stopped beating! It was a snake and it was headed straight for Lillie. Although I wouldn’t consider myself to be the bravest person in the world I am generally not that wimpy either, and am not scared of much as far as creatures go. I could pick up a huge spider or just about any kind of bug or rodent if I had too (although I don’t like to! I am not an animal person at all, but they don’t really scare me either). However, I am completely and utterly petrified of snakes! I completely froze – I was trying to scream and nothing was coming out. I could see it’s body as it slithered right up next to Lillie and then it rear it’s head!!!! It almost seemed like a movie because everything was happening in slow motion. I finally screamed “JohnMark – a SNAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!” Honestly, by the time I screamed it probably would have been too late. Fortunately, JohnMark saw it as it reared it’s head up and in one motion snatched Lillie up with one arm and swatted the snake with his other and  thank goodness it took off. I am so thankful Lillie didn’t see it first because I think she would have reached for it. Although she didn’t cry or anything, I think the whole thing did scare her a bit because she is normally much of a snuggler and doesn’t like to be held and she actually clung to JohnMark for a good five minutes or so before she wanted to get back down.
I was a bit shaken the rest of the night but was more just creeped out than scared. On the ride home Jon and I were talking about it and I said something along the lines of  “…well, I suppose it was really more creepy scary than truly scary because although it was frightening in a creepy way it isn’t like those snakes are harmful.” Jon spun around and was like “What? Water moccasins are basically the most poisonous snakes around!” (Although I am certainly not an animal specialist I did look at a bunch of pictures online today and I am pretty sure it was indeed a water moccasin). Growing up in New England I had no idea of that, so I looked it up on my phone as we were driving home and my heart stopped when I started reading that they were deadly. Obviously, I don’t know that it would have bitten her, but if JohnMark hadn’t of snatched her right then and knocked it away and it had of bitten her……..I can’t even think about it! All I know is I am so incredibly grateful her heavenly Father was watching over her and so grateful for JohnMark’s quick action (now I won’t ever be able to tease him about being unathletic again…haha!)
Just writing about it is getting me all worked up again so I had better move on to something happier! Here are some pictures of some new hand knit hats we are going to be offering this fall. Dana is knitting them and so far we are going to have them in gray, navy and cream. (And maybe more colors, eventually). We will have them in both women’s and children’s sizes.
She wore a cream one tonight with a new skirt we are also going to be offering soon as well. It is just a super quick horrible photo I took as we were headed out the door but I hope to take some real photos of both the hats and our three new skirts this weekend. (Most of the beanies will be offered with optional clips – we have several different styles of clips to choose from).
The lovely bright green stuff in her hands is the package of Dana’s gum she got into!
And here are a few more pictures from this week. I did a trade with Prencie at Princy ‘N Paris that included this adorable sash and hair clip but Lillie refused to stand still for long enough for me to get a good shot of it. It is the cutest thing and I hope to get some better pictures of it soon! The skirt is Dear Lillie.
And finally- I know I promised a giveaway at some point this week. I had something planned (one of our new screenprinted messenger bags) but it wasn’t ready, so instead I am just going to do a little mini giveaway. 14. Oh my goodness Jenni! Reading this post I can only imagine how scary that must have been to see a snake going after Lillabel. So glad everything is ok.
Loving the new items to come to the shop. What a sweet giveaway too. 🙂

  15. Oh wow, what a scare! So glad she wasn't bitten! I probably would have frozen up as well. As a parent you always imagine how you would handle scary situations w/ your children but when a problem arises we usually don't react like we think we will…fear takes over! I found that out earlier this year when Ella fell and bit off a portion of her upper lip. I panicked when I found her laying in so much blood and I got hysterical…I failed the "handles emergency situations well" test! LOL!

LOOOOVE that cream beanie w/ flower. How much will they be offered for? I can totally picture Ella wearing that for fall photos! Too sweet! I'd have to be quick though b/c she always pulls stuff like that off her head…you're lucky Lillie will let you put all those cute accessories on!

  16. Ahh – I am so glad you said that Hana! I have been feeling like the worst mom ever! I always imagined in a scary situation my adreline would take over and not my fear and instead I literally FROZE in fear. Haha! Oh well, at least both Ella and Lillie survived!

Lillie never last long with anything on her head either except for clips. For some reason she hates hats (as you can see from that third pictures of her wearing the hat – she was ripping it off) and headbands but loves little clips. In fact when her clips fall out she gets very ruffled and tries to put them back in herself.

I am not sure about the price on the beanies. Dana is doing the math and figuring out exactly how long they took her to make and her costs but I think they will be in the low $20's? I think we will know by tomorrow and then probably will list them either Monday or Tuesday!

And Jenn – you are so right! All of the sudden I feel like Lillie is completely grown up – what happened?????? Ahhhh!

  17. Wow! My heart dropped reading this. My mother in law got bit by a snake and I have seen the damage it does. God was watching over her pretty little face. Can't wait until we can order that hat and skirt…it's on my wishlist :). Your daughter actually let's you keep it on her!?
Anyways…fan on facebook, follow your blog too! 🙂

  18. I'm back for a daily entry to up my chances of winning your adorable onesie! And speaking of adorable, those photos of Lillie above just blow me away! She is exquisite. Don't let a Hollywood agent catch a glimpse of her, or you'll be in trouble!

  19. Oh my heck I would have died with fright! When it comes your children's safety, nothing else really matters. I'm so glad she's safe.
Love all the pictures. So adorable.

  20. I am so glad that your precious daughter is ok! How scary! I grew up where water moccasins are very common, but I thought they tended to be afraid of people. So glad it turned out well!

  21. Dropping by to say 'hello' and put in my daily entry. Cheers to JohnMark, the hero of the day!
    elliebeetle (at) gmail (d0t) com

  22. omg I am so glad no one was hurt by the water moccasin. They are truly evil! They don't stop attacking a threat to their territory until the threat isn't a threat anymore. I am so glad the snake swam away rather than continuing to attack.

  23. Oh, I love the Model T! It would be adorable on my little boy, that is when he finally debuts.

  24. Poor Lillie and poor you! I would have probably fainted if that was Jude. Stress like that is the last thing you need with being pregnant. I am so happy to hear she is okay.

Just got Jude's shirt today, I love it! I think it will fit perfectly 🙂 I think he needs the Model T shirt also 😉

And love the hats, they are really adorable.

  25. Thanks for sharing this story. It's an important reminder that we are all responsible for our children's safety.
I'm also dropping in to say 'hello' and put in my daily entry.
